Inspect For Fire Hazards

Fires cause death and injuries. They also cause job losses. In fact, a great many of the workplaces that are destroyed by fire are never rebuilt.

Fire prevention on-the-job is everyone's job. We all need to be alert to anything that could cause a fire, and take responsibility to report any problem areas so they can be corrected. Follow these tips for a fire-safe workplace:

  • Strictly observe restrictions on smoking. Many fires are caused by smoking in storage areas or near flammable liquids. Use ashtrays, not the floor, for butts. Empty ashtrays only when smoking materials are cold. Don't forget that smoking restrictions apply to everyone, including visitors.

  • Check electrical equipment for signs of wear or damage. This includes outlets and cords as well as the equipment itself. Defective electrical equipment is frequently the cause of fires. Report these signs promptly.

  • Avoid using temporary wiring, including extension cords. Continued use of extension cords is a sign that wiring is inadequate and needs to be upgraded.
